Four days in Oostduinkerke: NAVIGO fisheries museum, shrimp fishers on horseback, the Dunes Abbey and the Hoge Blekker dune.
Oostduinkerke is the last place in the world where shrimp are still fished on horseback, a tradition listed as UNESCO intangible heritage. Your group discovers this craft at NAVIGO, the national fisheries museum, then, depending on the season and tides, watches the fishermen ride into the waves on their draught horses. In neighbouring Koksijde, the Dunes Abbey museum presents the remains of one of the largest Cistercian abbeys in Flanders, at the foot of the Hoge Blekker dune. Free afternoons leave time to enjoy the flat promenade and the beach. The abbey ruins are explored on partly grassy paths, without any particular difficulty.
Programme
Day 1: Arrival in Oostduinkerke
- Departure in the morning from the pick-up point of your choice.
- Coffee break on the way; our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
- Arrival in Oostduinkerke in the late morning.

- Gentle stroll along the Oostduinkerke promenade.
- Check-in at the hotel near the sea, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Shrimp fishing
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Visit of NAVIGO, the national fisheries museum (on request).
- Demonstration of shrimp fishing on horseback, depending on tides and season (on request).
- Tasting of brown shrimp (on request).
- Free afternoon on the beach.
- Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 3: Dunes Abbey in Koksijde
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Short coach ride to Koksijde.
- Visit of the museum and remains of the Dunes Abbey (on request).
- View of the Hoge Blekker, one of the highest dunes on the Belgian coast.
- Reserved lunch in Koksijde (on request).
- Free afternoon in Oostduinkerke.
- Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 4: Return
