Nijmegen, the oldest town in the Netherlands, the Betuwe orchards and little Buren, then the memory of 1944 in Groesbeek.
Founded by the Romans on the Waal, Nijmegen claims to be the oldest town in the Netherlands and has a pleasant old town around the Grote Markt and St Stephen’s Church. From Valkhof Park, the view of the river and its bridges is superb. The neighbouring Betuwe is the country’s orchard, with apples, pears and cherries, spectacular blossom in spring and charming little towns such as Buren, linked to the House of Orange. The last day is devoted, for those who wish, to the memory of the Liberation in Groesbeek. The pace is gentle, with two nights in the same hotel and a town centre partly sloping down to the Waal.
