Six days in Lower Silesia: Śnieżka, the Giant Mountains waterfalls, Książ Castle, the Riese tunnels and Wrocław.
On the Czech border, the Giant Mountains (Karkonosze) form a national park of ridges, peat bogs and waterfalls. Pupils climb Śnieżka, the range’s highest peak at 1,603 metres, and discover in Karpacz the Wang Temple, a medieval Norwegian wooden church moved here in the 19th century. Książ Castle, one of the largest in Poland, and the Osówka underground galleries, dug by forced labourers and prisoners for the Nazi Riese project, address the history of the Second World War. The Church of Peace in Świdnica, a huge wooden church listed by UNESCO, tells the story of religious coexistence after the Thirty Years’ War. A final day in Wrocław, among bronze dwarfs and the Market Square, rounds off the tour. This trip suits secondary-school geography, science, history and physical education classes.
