Ten days to understand Poland: Poznań, Warsaw, Kraków, the Wieliczka mine, the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Wrocław.
This grand loop through Poland helps pupils understand a thousand years of history of a country at the heart of Europe. In Poznań they go back to the origins of the Polish state; in Warsaw they discover a capital destroyed in 1944 and then rebuilt, and the story of the Uprising. Kraków, the former royal capital, and the Wieliczka Salt Mine, both listed by UNESCO in 1978, reveal the Poland of kings and of underground work. The visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, prepared in class and led by an educator-guide from the museum, is a solemn and essential moment of remembrance; as the museum recommends, it is intended for pupils aged 14 and over. Wrocław, a young city of islands and bronze dwarfs, ends the trip on a lighter note. This tour suits history, geography and citizenship classes for pupils aged 14 to 18.
