Nine days of nature: the primeval forest of Białowieża and its bison, the great Masurian lakes by kayak and boat, and Warsaw.
This nature tour takes pupils to eastern Poland, far from the big cities. Białowieża Forest, shared with Belarus and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the last primeval lowland forests in Europe; it is where the European bison, extinct in the wild, was reintroduced. With a national park guide, the young people observe a forest where dead trees stay where they fall and feed a whole chain of life. In Masuria, the “land of a thousand lakes” shaped by glaciers, they paddle, sail and discover the Prussian Boyen Fortress in Giżycko. A stop at the Wolf’s Lair, Hitler’s former headquarters and the scene of the 20 July 1944 assassination attempt, adds a historical dimension, and the tour begins with a day in Warsaw. It suits secondary-school biology, geography and environmental education classes.
