In Metz, pupils go from modern art at the Centre Pompidou-Metz to the stained glass of Saint-Étienne cathedral, including Chagall’s.
Metz, in Lorraine, lets pupils travel through eight centuries of art in a single day. At the Centre Pompidou-Metz, opened in 2010 beneath a spectacular timber roof designed by architect Shigeru Ban, they discover exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. Saint-Étienne cathedral, nicknamed “God’s lantern”, has one of the largest areas of stained glass in France, from medieval windows to works by Marc Chagall. A walk to the Porte des Allemands (Germans’ Gate) completes the discovery of a city shaped by its history between France and Germany. This trip suits secondary pupils in art, history or French.
