Five days in Mariakerke, next to Ostend: James Ensor House, Spilliaert and Permeke at Mu.ZEE, Flemish Primitives in Bruges.
A peaceful seaside district of Ostend, Mariakerke offers a long, flat promenade and a beach calmer than the town centre, while staying close to its museums. The North Sea light has inspired great painters: your group visits the James Ensor House, above his family’s former souvenir shop, then Mu.ZEE, where works by Ensor, Léon Spilliaert and Constant Permeke can be admired. A day in Bruges goes back to the roots with the Flemish Primitives of the Groeninge Museum. Free afternoons leave time to stroll on the promenade, sit on a terrace or rest. Ensor himself is buried in Mariakerke, near the little church in the dunes.
Programme
Day 1: Arrival in Mariakerke
- Departure in the morning from the pick-up point of your choice.
- Coffee break on the way; our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
- Arrival in Mariakerke in the late morning.
- Reserved lunch on the promenade (on request).
- Stroll to the Church of Our Lady of the Dunes, near which James Ensor is buried.
- Check-in at the hotel near the sea, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: James Ensor in Ostend
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Short coach ride to the centre of Ostend.
- Visit of the James Ensor House (on request).
- Reserved lunch in Ostend (on request).
- Free afternoon on the Ostend promenade or in Mariakerke.
- Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 3: Mu.ZEE and free afternoon
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Visit of Mu.ZEE: Ensor, Spilliaert and Permeke (on request).
- Free afternoon in Mariakerke.
- Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 4: Bruges and the Flemish Primitives
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Drive to Bruges.

- Free time in the centre before returning to Mariakerke.
