A day in the volcanic Eifel: Maria Laach Abbey on its lake, then the Andernach geyser near the Rhine.
The volcanic Eifel has some lovely surprises in store, about two and a half hours from the Liège area. The Benedictine abbey of Maria Laach, a jewel of Romanesque architecture, stands on the shore of a lake of volcanic origin, in a wonderfully peaceful setting. In the afternoon, your group heads to Andernach on the Rhine: after the geyser visitor centre, a boat takes you to the Namedyer Werth peninsula, where the world’s highest cold-water geyser shoots up to about sixty metres. The show can be watched at leisure after a short, flat walk. A day of nature and heritage, ideal from spring to autumn.
