Three days in central Alsace: walled Obernai, Sélestat, birthplace of the Christmas tree, and the medieval Christmas of Ribeauvillé.

Away from the crowds of the big cities, this getaway reveals the Alsace of small Christmas towns. Obernai, with its market square, corn hall and half-timbered houses, is the group’s base for two nights in the same hotel. In Sélestat, the Humanist Library keeps one of the oldest known written mentions of the Christmas tree, dated 1521, and the town celebrates the tree every year. Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle, perched at over 700 metres, offers a magnificent view over the plain, but its visit involves many steps, so it remains optional. Depending on the dates, the medieval Christmas market of Ribeauvillé, open on Advent weekends, rounds off the day with its musicians and period costumes.

Programme

Day 1: Journey to Obernai

  • Morning departure from the pick-up point of your choice, at a time suited to your region.
  • Comfortable coach journey: our drivers drive for a maximum of 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break.
  • Free lunch on the way.
  • Arrival in Obernai in the late afternoon and check-in at the hotel for 2 nights.
  • First stroll at the Christmas market, around the market square and the corn hall.
  • Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 2: Sélestat, Haut-Kœnigsbourg and Ribeauvillé

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Short drive to Sélestat.
  • Visit of the Humanist Library (on request).
  • Free time in the old town and at the Sélestat Christmas market.
  • Seated lunch in an Alsatian restaurant (on request).
  • Visit of Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle (on request).
  • In the late afternoon, the medieval Christmas market of Ribeauvillé, depending on its opening days.
  • Return to the hotel in Obernai.
  • Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 3: Obernai and return

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Guided tour of Obernai: ramparts, belfry and the Six-Bucket Well (on request).
  • Free time to shop for bredele biscuits and gingerbread.
  • Return journey in the late morning.
  • Return in the evening to your region.

Good to know

  • Valid identity card and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for each participant; bring your usual medication.
  • Departure and return times adapted to your group’s pick-up point; trip available from 20 participants, on the date of your choice, price on quotation.
  • Walking level: easy to moderate; flat small towns with cobbled streets; Haut-Kœnigsbourg involves slopes and many steps. Wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility: please let us know when booking.
  • The medieval market in Ribeauvillé only opens on Advent weekends; christmas markets: from late November to late December, to be checked each year; bring warm clothing.

Cancellation and refund protection

Optional, to be taken when booking: you can cancel without giving a reason and get the base price of the trip back, provided your request reaches us at least 48 hours before departure for a day trip, 7 days before if admission tickets are included, 14 days before for a trip with overnight stays. Price: 7 % of the trip up to €1,000, 5 % from €1,001 to €2,500, 3.5 % above.
