Four days in Lyon around 8 December: the Festival of Lights, the Christmas market, Vieux-Lyon and the Basilica of Fourvière.
Every year around 8 December, Lyon thanks the Virgin Mary by lighting candles in its windows, a tradition born in 1852 that has become one of the finest festivals of light in Europe. Monuments, squares and façades then turn into luminous paintings, best discovered in the evening with a guide who knows the best routes. During the day, the funicular climbs to the Basilica of Fourvière, with a view over the whole city, then the group strolls through Renaissance Vieux-Lyon, a UNESCO site, and its famous traboules. Lunch in a Lyon bouchon and the Christmas market on Place Carnot complete this gourmet stay. To be honest, the crowds are very dense in the evening and the outward trip is a long day on the road, but three nights in the same hotel allow plenty of rest.
Programme
Day 1: Journey to Lyon
- Morning departure from the pick-up point of your choice, at a time suited to your region.
- Comfortable coach journey: our drivers drive for a maximum of 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break.
- Free lunch on the way; this is the longest travel day of the trip.
- Arrival in Lyon at the end of the day and check-in at the hotel for 3 nights.
- Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 2: Fourvière, Vieux-Lyon and first evening of lights
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Funicular ride up to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière and panorama over the city.
- Guided tour of Vieux-Lyon and its traboules (on request).
- Lunch in a Lyon bouchon (on request).
- Afternoon rest at the hotel or free time.
- Dinner at the hotel.
- Guided walk through the Festival of Lights in the evening (on request).
Day 3: Presqu’île, Christmas market and food hall
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Free morning on the Presqu’île, from Place Bellecour to Place des Terreaux (driver’s rest day).
- Gourmet visit of the Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse (on request).
- Free time at the Christmas market on Place Carnot.
- Dinner at the hotel.
- Second free evening to admire the lights, staying in small groups.
Day 4: Return to Belgium
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Departure in the morning.
- Return journey with regular breaks and free lunch on the way.
- Return in the evening to your region.

Good to know
- Valid identity card and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for each participant; bring your usual medication.
- Departure and return times adapted to your group’s pick-up point; trip available from 20 participants, on the date of your choice, price on quotation.
- Walking level: moderate; cobbled Vieux-Lyon, traboules with a few steps, funicular to Fourvière; in the evening, slow walking amid dense crowds. Wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility: please let us know when booking.
- The Festival of Lights takes place every year over four evenings around 8 December (dates to be checked); very dense crowds in the evening, stay with your guide; the Christmas market on Place Carnot runs from late November to late December.
