Two Christmas days in Gelderland: Nijmegen, the oldest town in the Netherlands, its lit-up streets and the Waal, then Arnhem and its open-air museum.
Nijmegen, founded by the Romans, dresses up for Christmas around the Grote Markt and St Stephen’s Church, with lively, illuminated shopping streets. Your group enjoys a relaxed afternoon, a stroll along the Waal quays and a warm evening at the hotel. The next day in Arnhem, the Netherlands Open Air Museum (Nederlands Openluchtmuseum) can bring old farms, windmills and workshops back to life, depending on its winter programme. Arnhem’s centre on the Rhine also recalls the famous battle for the bridge in 1944. The trip is short, with no long drive and just one hotel night.
Programme
Day 1: Nijmegen
- Morning departure from the pick-up point of your choice; our drivers drive for no more than 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break.
- Coffee break on the way.
- Arrival in Nijmegen in the late morning.
- Seated lunch in the old town (on request).
- Guided tour of the old town: Grote Markt, St Stephen’s Church and Valkhof Park (on request).
- Free time at the Christmas market and in the illuminated streets.
- Check-in at the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Arnhem and return
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Short drive to Arnhem.
- Visit to the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum, depending on its winter programme (on request).
- Seated lunch in Arnhem (on request).
- Free time in the centre of Arnhem and stop near the John Frost Bridge.
- Return journey with regular breaks, arriving back in your region in the evening.

- Christmas markets and events in the Netherlands take place from late November to late December, to be checked each year: some last only a few days; bring warm clothing. Easy to moderate walking: Nijmegen’s centre slopes down to the Waal; the open-air museum is large (internal tram depending on the season).
