Four Christmas days in the north: Groningen, its Martinitoren and its Winterwelvaart of old ships, then Leeuwarden, capital of Friesland.
Far from the crowds, the north of the Netherlands offers a warm and authentic Christmas atmosphere. Groningen, a lively student city dominated by the Martinitoren, lights up during Advent, and in some years hosts the Winterwelvaart in mid-December, a gathering of historic ships and Christmas stalls along its quays. Your group also discovers the peaceful Prinsenhof garden and can visit the Groninger Museum. In Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland, the leaning Oldehove tower and the Princessehof ceramics museum make a lovely day among Christmas lights and canals. The journey is longer, but three nights in the same hotel keep the pace restful.
Programme
Day 1: Journey to Groningen
- Morning departure from the pick-up point of your choice; our drivers drive for no more than 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break.
- Coffee break on the way.
- Lunch at leisure on the way, with regular breaks.
- Arrival in Groningen in the late afternoon.
- Check-in at the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Groningen
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Stroll on the Grote Markt, at the foot of the Martinitoren, and in the Prinsenhof garden.
- Guided tour of Groningen (on request).
- Seated lunch in the centre (on request).
- Free time at the Christmas market, or at the Winterwelvaart if it takes place on the date of the trip.
- Visit to the Groninger Museum (on request).
- Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 3: Leeuwarden
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Drive to Leeuwarden, capital of Friesland.
- Stroll through the centre to the leaning Oldehove tower.
- Visit to the Princessehof ceramics museum (on request).
- Seated lunch in Leeuwarden (on request).
- Free time in the illuminated streets, then return to Groningen.
- Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 4: Return
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Return journey with regular breaks, arriving back in your region in the evening.

- Christmas markets and events in the Netherlands take place from late November to late December, to be checked each year: some last only a few days; bring warm clothing. The Winterwelvaart takes place on just one weekend in December: check the date to enjoy it. Easy walking on flat ground, cobbles in the centres; longer outward and return journeys.
