Two Christmas days in North Holland: Alkmaar and its illuminated canals, cheese-making Edam and the old harbour of Hoorn.

North of Amsterdam, away from the crowds, Alkmaar offers during Advent canals lined with lights, lively shopping streets and its famous Waag, the weigh house that houses a cheese museum. Your group spends the afternoon and evening there at a leisurely pace. The next day, Edam reveals its little bridges, quiet canals and old cheese weigh house, followed by Hoorn, a former port of the Dutch East India Company on the old Zuiderzee, with its harbour and Roode Steen square. All three towns are flat and compact, ideal for easy walking. One hotel night, a gentle pace and warm breaks set the rhythm of the trip.

Programme

Day 1: Alkmaar

  • Morning departure from the pick-up point of your choice; our drivers drive for no more than 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break.
  • Coffee break on the way.
  • Arrival in Alkmaar in the early afternoon.
  • Seated lunch in the centre (on request).
  • Visit to the cheese museum in the Waag (on request).
  • Free time at the Christmas market and along the illuminated canals.
  • Check-in at the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Edam, Hoorn and return

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Short drive to Edam and stroll along the canals to the old cheese weigh house.
  • Tasting of Edam cheeses (on request).
  • Stop in Hoorn: old harbour and Roode Steen square.
  • Seated lunch in Hoorn (on request).
  • Return journey with regular breaks, arriving back in your region in the evening.

Good to know

  • Valid identity card and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for each participant.
  • Times adapted to your group’s pick-up point; from 20 participants, on the date of your choice, price on quotation. Wheelchairs and reduced mobility: please let us know when booking.
  • Christmas markets and events in the Netherlands take place from late November to late December, to be checked each year: some last only a few days; bring warm clothing. Easy walking on flat ground, cobbles and little bridges; the return journey takes several hours, with regular breaks.

Cancellation and refund protection

Optional, to be taken when booking: you can cancel without giving a reason and get the base price of the trip back, provided your request reaches us at least 48 hours before departure for a day trip, 7 days before if admission tickets are included, 14 days before for a trip with overnight stays. Price: 7 % of the trip up to €1,000, 5 % from €1,001 to €2,500, 3.5 % above.
