A day in Deventer during the Dickens Festival: hundreds of characters from Dickens’s novels bring the old town to life.

One weekend a year, in mid-December, the Hanseatic town of Deventer travels back in time to 19th-century England. In the lanes of the Bergkwartier, hundreds of costumed performers bring Charles Dickens’s characters to life: Scrooge, Oliver Twist, chimney sweeps, street vendors and choirs. Among the old façades, the stalls, the smell of roasted chestnuts and the Christmas carols create an unforgettable fairy-tale atmosphere. Your group also enjoys the centre of Deventer, the Brink square and St Lebuinus Church. The festival is very busy: we plan free time and a booked lunch so you can catch your breath in the warm.

Programme

  • Morning departure from the pick-up point of your choice.
  • Our drivers drive for a maximum of 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break.
  • Arrival in Deventer in the late morning and drop-off as close as possible to the centre.
  • Lunch booked in a restaurant (on request)
  • In the afternoon, walk through the Bergkwartier among the characters of the Dickens Festival, the stalls and the choirs.
  • Free time on the Brink square and around St Lebuinus Church.
  • Treat break with a hot drink and pastry (on request)
  • Departure in the late afternoon.
  • Return to your region in the evening.

  • The Dickens Festival takes place on one weekend only, in mid-December: very large crowds and possible queues; dates to be checked each year.

Cancellation and refund protection

Optional, to be taken when booking: you can cancel without giving a reason and get the base price of the trip back, provided your request reaches us at least 48 hours before departure for a day trip, 7 days before if admission tickets are included, 14 days before for a trip with overnight stays. Price: 7 % of the trip up to €1,000, 5 % from €1,001 to €2,500, 3.5 % above.
