A day in the French Ardennes: the Christmas market on Place Ducale, the Great Puppeteer clock and the Rimbaud museum.

Very close to the Belgian border, Charleville-Mézières is ideal for a Christmas day out without fatigue. Its market sets up on Place Ducale, a vast arcaded square built in the early 17th century at the request of Charles de Gonzague, a cousin of the Place des Vosges in Paris. A few steps away, the Great Puppeteer clock brings to life a scene from the legend of the Four Sons of Aymon every hour, a show the grandchildren would envy. Your group can also discover the Arthur Rimbaud museum, housed in the Old Mill on the Meuse, or the contemporary stained glass of the basilica in Mézières. The centre is flat, the arcades offer shelter from the cold and lunch is enjoyed seated, in the warmth.

Good to know

  • Valid identity card and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for each participant; bring your usual medication.
  • Departure and return times adapted to your group’s pick-up point; trip available from 20 participants, on the date of your choice, price on quotation.
  • Walking level: easy; flat town centre, Place Ducale partly cobbled, short walking distances. Wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility: please let us know when booking.
  • Christmas markets: from late November to late December, to be checked each year; bring warm clothing.

Cancellation and refund protection

Optional, to be taken when booking: you can cancel without giving a reason and get the base price of the trip back, provided your request reaches us at least 48 hours before departure for a day trip, 7 days before if admission tickets are included, 14 days before for a trip with overnight stays. Price: 7 % of the trip up to €1,000, 5 % from €1,001 to €2,500, 3.5 % above.
