5 days in Lombardy: Mantua and its lakes, the Ducal Palace and Palazzo Te, the ideal city of Sabbioneta and Cremona's violins.
Surrounded on three sides by the lakes formed by the Mincio, Mantua was for almost four centuries the city of the Gonzaga family, and it keeps palaces of rare splendour. In the Ducal Palace, the Bridal Chamber painted by Mantegna is a marvel, while Giulio Romano's Palazzo Te astonishes with its monumental frescoes. Nearby Sabbioneta, built as an ideal Renaissance city, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Mantua. Cremona, home of Stradivari, is explored at your own pace between the cathedral, the Torrazzo and the Violin Museum. The ground is flat everywhere, and the cuisine, from pumpkin tortelli to torrone, accompanies every day.
Programme
Day 1: Departure and overnight stopover (central Switzerland)
- Morning departure from the place of your choice.
- Journey with regular breaks: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
- Late-afternoon arrival at the stopover hotel (central Switzerland), dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Journey to Mantua
- Breakfast, then drive via the Gotthard and the Po plain, with regular breaks.
- Seated lunch on the way (on request).
- Arrival in Mantua in mid-afternoon and check-in at the hotel for 2 nights.
- First stroll through the squares of the centre: Piazza Sordello, Piazza delle Erbe and the Rotonda di San Lorenzo.
- Dinner at the hotel.
Day 3: Gonzaga palaces and Sabbioneta
- Guided tour of the Ducal Palace and Mantegna's Bridal Chamber (on request).
- Lunch of pumpkin tortelli, a Mantuan speciality (on request).
- Short drive to Sabbioneta and guided tour of the ideal city and its Teatro all'Antica (on request).
- Return to Mantua; in season, boat trip on the Mincio lakes (on request).
- Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4: Cremona, then journey to the stopover (central Switzerland)
- Breakfast, then visit of Palazzo Te and its Chamber of the Giants (on request).
- Drive to Cremona: cathedral square, Torrazzo and baptistery.
- Visit of the Violin Museum, devoted to Stradivari and Cremona's violin makers (on request).
- Return journey with regular breaks: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
- Late-afternoon arrival at the stopover hotel (central Switzerland), dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Return to Belgium
- Breakfast, then return journey with regular breaks.
- Evening return to your home area.

Good to know
- Valid identity card and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for each participant. Bring enough of your usual medication.
- Departure and return times adapted to your group's pick-up point; trip offered from March to November, dates to be checked each year. From 20 participants, price on quotation.
- Walking level: easy (short walks, some cobbled lanes); a meeting time at the coach is set each day with the driver. Wheelchair users or guests with reduced mobility: please tell us when booking.
- Currency: euro in Italy, Swiss franc during the stopover nights in Switzerland. Bring comfortable clothes for the journey and sun cream.
