5 days in Emilia-Romagna: Bologna under its porticoes, its famous cuisine, and Ferrara, the Renaissance city of the Este.
Bologna can be explored under cover: its porticoes, listed by UNESCO, line dozens of kilometres of pavements and protect from both sun and rain. Your group discovers Piazza Maggiore, the Neptune Fountain, the Basilica of San Petronio and the famous two towers, then the stalls of the Quadrilatero, the old market. The city is also Italy's food capital, home of tortellini, tagliatelle and mortadella, to be tasted at a reserved lunch. An hour's drive away, Ferrara, city of the Este dukes, offers a moated castle, a Romanesque cathedral and very quiet Renaissance streets. The ground is flat everywhere, and two nights in the same 3-star hotel on half board avoid repacking.
Programme
Day 1: Departure and overnight stopover (central Switzerland)
- Morning departure from the place of your choice.
- Journey with regular breaks: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
- Late-afternoon arrival at the stopover hotel (central Switzerland), dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Journey to Bologna
- Breakfast, then drive via the Gotthard and the Po plain, with regular breaks.
- Seated lunch on the way (on request).
- Arrival in Bologna in the afternoon and check-in at the hotel for 2 nights.
- Dinner at the hotel.
Day 3: Ferrara, city of the Este
- Breakfast, then drive to Ferrara (about one hour).
- Guided tour of the Este Castle, the cathedral and the Renaissance streets (on request).
- Lunch of Ferrara specialities, such as pumpkin cappellacci (on request).
- Free time, then return to Bologna in the late afternoon.
- Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4: Bologna, then journey to the stopover (central Switzerland)
- Breakfast, then guided tour of Bologna: Piazza Maggiore, Neptune Fountain, Basilica of San Petronio and the two towers (on request).
- Walk under the porticoes and through the Quadrilatero, the old market.
- Lunch of tortellini and tagliatelle in a trattoria (on request).
- Return journey with regular breaks: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
- Late-afternoon arrival at the stopover hotel (central Switzerland), dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Return to Belgium
- Breakfast, then return journey with regular breaks.
- Evening return to your home area.

Good to know
- Valid identity card and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for each participant. Bring enough of your usual medication.
- Departure and return times adapted to your group's pick-up point; trip offered from March to November, dates to be checked each year. From 20 participants, price on quotation.
- Walking level: easy (short walks, some cobbled lanes); a meeting time at the coach is set each day with the driver. Wheelchair users or guests with reduced mobility: please tell us when booking.
- Currency: euro in Italy, Swiss franc during the stopover nights in Switzerland. Bring comfortable clothes for the journey and sun cream.
