A day in Maastricht exploring the caves of Mount Saint Peter and two thousand years of history on the banks of the Meuse.
Less than an hour from Liège, Maastricht is an ideal destination for a first school trip abroad. With a guide, pupils explore the caves of Mount Saint Peter, a maze of man-made tunnels dug to extract marl, where they discover fossils, old drawings on the walls and the life of the quarrymen. Above ground, the old town tells two thousand years of history, from the Romans to the 1992 Maastricht Treaty that created the European Union. Pupils can also practise their first words of Dutch. The trip suits history, geography and science lessons, ideally for pupils aged 10 to 14.
