A day in the northern French coalfield: the Gallery of Time at the Louvre-Lens and the mine galleries of Lewarde.
The Nord-Pas-de-Calais mining basin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, tells nearly three centuries of coal history. Opened in 2012 on a former colliery site, the Louvre-Lens presents masterpieces from the Louvre in its Gallery of Time (Galerie du temps), arranged chronologically from Antiquity to the 19th century. At the Centre historique minier in Lewarde, set in the former Delloye pit, pupils follow in the miners’ footsteps down to reconstructed galleries. They learn about working conditions, the role of pit ponies and the arrival of miners from all over Europe. The day suits history, social studies and art classes, from the last two years of primary school to the end of secondary school.
