The Lewarde Mining History Centre and its galleries, then Douai, its UNESCO-listed belfry and the Scarpe quays.
The coalfield of Nord-Pas-de-Calais shaped generations, and many Belgian families share this history of coal. In Lewarde, the former Delloye pit houses the Centre historique minier, the largest mining museum in France, with its reconstructed galleries, machines and personal accounts. After a seated lunch, your group continues to nearby Douai, whose Gothic belfry is one of the belfries of Belgium and France on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Free time lets you stroll on the Grand-Place and along the Scarpe. A warm day close to home, with little driving.
