Nine days in western Slovenia: Karst stone villages, Škocjan Caves, Vipava and Brda wines, the Soča and Kobarid.

Between the Alps and the Adriatic, western Slovenia brings together very varied landscapes, which your group discovers from the same hotel for six nights. The Karst plateau offers stone villages such as Štanjel, ham dried in the bora wind and red Teran wine, as well as Predjama Castle, perched in a cliff. The UNESCO-listed Škocjan Caves impress with their underground canyon, but the visit involves many steps and is therefore optional. To the north, the turquoise Soča leads to Kobarid and its First World War museum, while the hills of Goriška Brda and the Vipava valley are renowned for their wines and cherries. A free day halfway through ensures rest for everyone and for the driver.

Programme

Day 1: Journey to southern Germany

  • Morning departure from the place of your choice.
  • Journey with a coffee break and a lunch stop: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
  • Late-afternoon arrival at the stopover hotel in southern Germany, dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Over the Austrian Alps to western Slovenia

  • Breakfast, then journey through Austria (Tauern and Karawanken tunnels) and Ljubljana, with regular breaks.
  • Late-afternoon arrival in the Nova Gorica and Vipava valley area, check-in at the hotel for 6 nights, dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Vipava valley and Štanjel

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Stop in Vipava at the springs of the river, then at the hilltop village of Vipavski Križ.
  • Vipava valley wine tasting at a winegrower’s (on request).
  • Lunch at a farm inn (on request).
  • Walk in the stone village of Štanjel and its terraced garden.
  • Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Škocjan, Predjama and Karst flavours

  • Breakfast, then drive to the Karst.
  • Guided tour of the UNESCO-listed Škocjan Caves (on request).
  • Lunch with Karst ham and Teran wine (on request).
  • Visit of Predjama Castle, built into the mouth of a cave (on request).
  • Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Free day

  • Free day on foot around the hotel (driver’s rest day): walks, terraces, relaxation.
  • Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 6: The Soča valley and Kobarid

  • Breakfast, then drive along the Soča, with stops at the Solkan bridge and in Kanal.
  • Visit of the Kobarid Museum, devoted to the Isonzo Front in the First World War (on request).
  • Lunch in Kobarid (on request).
  • Walk to Napoleon’s Bridge over the Soča.
  • Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.

Day 7: The hills of Goriška Brda

  • Breakfast, then drive to Goriška Brda.
  • Walk in the fortified village of Šmartno.
  • Stop at Dobrovo Castle.
  • Brda wine tasting in a cellar (on request).
  • Regional lunch (on request).
  • Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Journey back to southern Germany

  • Breakfast, then return journey through Austria with regular breaks.
  • Late-afternoon arrival at the stopover hotel in southern Germany, dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Return to Belgium

  • Breakfast, then journey to Belgium with a coffee break and a lunch stop.
  • Return in the evening to your region.

  • Valid identity card and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for each participant; bring enough of any medication you take.
  • Times adapted to your group’s pick-up point, from 20 participants, price on quotation; wheelchair users: please let us know when booking.
  • Walking level: easy to moderate (gently sloping stone villages; Škocjan Caves: about 2 hours on foot with many steps, optional).
  • Best from April to October; cherry season in Brda is in June; cave and cellar times to be checked each year.
