A nature day in the High Fens, at Belgium’s highest point, among peat bogs, heathland and wooden boardwalks.

The High Fens plateau in eastern Belgium is home to peat bogs that have formed since the end of the last Ice Age and are protected as a nature reserve. At the Botrange Nature Park centre, near Signal de Botrange, the country’s highest point at 694 metres, pupils learn how peat forms and discover the harsh climate of the plateau and the wildlife and plants of the fens. Walking on the boardwalks, they observe sphagnum moss, cotton grass and perhaps the sundew, a small carnivorous plant. This outing is ideal for science and geography classes, for pupils aged 8 and over up to secondary school, with plenty of fresh air.
