Haarlem, its hofjes and great organ, Frans Hals and Teylers, then scholarly Leiden, its canals and botanical garden.

Haarlem and Leiden are two human-scale art towns, perfect for a group that prefers calm to the crowds of Amsterdam. In Haarlem, St Bavo’s Church houses a famous organ played by the young Mozart, and the hofjes, flowery almshouse courtyards, invite tranquillity. The Frans Hals Museum and the Teylers Museum, the oldest in the Netherlands, will delight art lovers. Leiden, a university town and Rembrandt’s birthplace, is discovered along its canals, its De Valk windmill and its Hortus botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe. In spring, a visit to Keukenhof can round off the trip.
