Five days in the north of the Netherlands: Groningen, Fraeylemaborg manor, the Bourtange fortress, the dolmens and Orvelte.
The north of the Netherlands is still little known, and that is its charm: wide, peaceful landscapes, brick villages and a lively university city. Groningen, dominated by the Martinitoren, offers its canals, its Grote Markt and the quiet Prinsenhof garden, while Fraeylemaborg manor in Slochteren reveals the life of the local gentry. The star-shaped fortress of Bourtange, restored with its windmills and low houses, is visited on the flat. Drenthe, a land of heath and forest, keeps its mysterious dolmens, the hunebedden, and the museum village of Orvelte. With four nights in the same hotel, the pace stays relaxed despite the distance.
Programme
Day 1: Journey to Groningen
- Morning departure from the pick-up point of your choice; our drivers drive for no more than 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break.
- Coffee break on the way.
- Lunch at leisure on the way, with regular breaks.
- Arrival in Groningen in the late afternoon.
- Check-in at the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Groningen
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Stroll on the Grote Markt, at the foot of the Martinitoren, and in the Prinsenhof garden.
- Guided tour of Groningen (on request).
- Canal cruise in Groningen (on request).
- Seated lunch in the centre (on request).
- Visit to the Groninger Museum (on request).
- Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 3: Fraeylemaborg and Bourtange
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Visit to Fraeylemaborg manor in Slochteren and its park (on request).
- Seated lunch (on request).
- In the afternoon, stroll through the star-shaped fortress of Bourtange, with its windmills and ramparts.
- Guided tour of the Bourtange fortress (on request).
- Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 4: Drenthe and its dolmens
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Drive through the heaths and forests of Drenthe.
- Visit to the Hunebedcentrum in Borger and its great dolmen (on request).
- Seated lunch (on request).
- Stroll through the museum village of Orvelte, with its thatched farmhouses.
- Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 5: Return
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Return journey with regular breaks, arriving back in your region in the evening.
