Four days in the cradle of Poland: Gniezno Cathedral and its bronze doors, Ostrów Lednicki island and the fortified village of Biskupin.
It was in Greater Poland, among lakes and fields, that the Polish state was born more than a thousand years ago. In Gniezno, the country’s first capital, your group discovers the cathedral where the first kings were crowned and its famous 12th-century bronze doors, which tell the life of St Adalbert. A small ferry then takes you to the island of Ostrów Lednicki, where the remains of the first Piasts’ palace survive, while the nearby open-air museum presents old rural houses. In Biskupin, an Iron Age wooden fortified town has been reconstructed by a lake, and in season a narrow-gauge train can take your group there. With a single hotel for three nights and short distances, the stay is restful despite the long journey made with two drivers.
Programme
Day 1: Journey to Gniezno
- Morning departure from the place of your choice, with two drivers on board.
- Regular breaks along the way: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
- Drive through Germany via Hanover and Berlin, then via Poznań, arriving in Gniezno in the evening and checking in at the hotel for 3 nights.
- Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 2: Gniezno and Ostrów Lednicki
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Guided tour of Gniezno Cathedral and its bronze doors (on request).
- Free time on the Market Square of Gniezno.
- Lunch booked at a restaurant (on request).
- Drive to Lake Lednica (about 20 minutes) and ferry crossing to the island of Ostrów Lednicki and its 10th-century remains.
- Visit to the Dziekanowice open-air museum, with its farmsteads and windmill.
- Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 3: Biskupin and Kruszwica
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Drive to Żnin (about 1 hour).
- Narrow-gauge train ride from Żnin to Biskupin (in season) (on request).
- Visit to the Biskupin archaeological museum and its reconstructed wooden fortified town by the lake.
- Lunch booked at a restaurant (on request).
- Stop in Kruszwica, on Lake Gopło, at the Mouse Tower, linked to a famous Polish legend.
- Return to Gniezno in the late afternoon.
- Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 4: Return to Belgium
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Early-morning departure with two drivers on board.
- Regular breaks along the way: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
- Arrival back in your region in the evening.

Good to know
- A valid identity card and a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for each participant.
- Departure and return times adapted to your group’s pick-up point; currency: Polish złoty (PLN), cards widely accepted.
- Walking level: easy to moderate (earth and gravel paths in Biskupin and Ostrów Lednicki); the ferry and the narrow-gauge train run mainly from May to September, to be checked each year.
