Five days in Catalonia: the Dalí museum in Figueres, the Greek city of Empúries, the Garrotxa volcanoes and Girona’s old town.
This compact tour of northern Catalonia brings together art, antiquity and earth sciences in just a few days. In Figueres, the Dalí Theatre-Museum immerses pupils in the surrealist world of the artist, who is buried there. On the coast, the site of Empúries shows the remains of a Greek colony founded in the 6th century BC and of a later Roman town. In the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, they walk up to the crater of an extinct volcano and through a beech forest growing on a lava flow. Girona, with its cathedral, city walls and medieval Jewish quarter, rounds off the trip. The programme suits secondary pupils in science, geography, history and art.
Programme
Day 1: Departure for Catalonia
- Departure from your school at the agreed time, in the late afternoon.
- Overnight journey with two drivers on board: our drivers drive for no more than 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break, by day and by night.
Day 2: Figueres and Empúries
- Arrival in Figueres in the morning.
- Visit to the Dalí Theatre-Museum (on request).
- Visit to the archaeological site of Empúries, a former Greek colony and later Roman town (on request).
- Drive to the Girona area.
- Check-in at the accommodation, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: The Garrotxa volcanoes
- Breakfast at the accommodation.
- Drive to the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park.
- Guided walk to the crater of the Santa Margarida volcano and through the Fageda d’en Jordà beech forest (on request).
- Stop in Besalú and its medieval bridge.
- Dinner and overnight stay at the accommodation.
Day 4: Girona and departure
- Breakfast and check-out.
- Walk through Girona’s old town: the colourful houses on the Onyar, the cathedral and the city walls.
- Visit to the Museum of Jewish History in the old Jewish quarter (the Call) (on request).
- Departure in the afternoon.
- Overnight return journey with two drivers and regular breaks (no more than 3 hours of driving, then a 30-minute break).
Day 5: Return to Belgium
- Arrival back at school in the morning.

- 2 nights in a youth hostel or hotel, rooms for 3 to 8 pupils and separate rooms for the teachers

Good to know
- A valid identity card (Kids-ID for children under 12) and parental consent for travel abroad are required; please also bring the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card).
- Times are adapted to your school, and pupils are supervised by their teachers.
- Good walking shoes are essential for the Garrotxa; bring a packed lunch and a rain jacket for the day in the natural park.
