A day in Ghent with a medieval castle, the Van Eyck brothers’ masterpiece and a walk along the historic quays.
In the Middle Ages, Ghent was one of the largest cities in northern Europe, grown rich on the cloth trade. At the Gravensteen, the Castle of the Counts built at the end of the 12th century, pupils discover the life of the lords, medieval weapons and justice. In St Bavo’s Cathedral, they admire the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by the Van Eyck brothers, completed in 1432 and regarded as one of the high points of Flemish painting. The day continues along the Graslei and Korenlei quays, then by boat on the river Leie. This trip suits history, art and Dutch classes, from the last years of primary school to secondary school.
