The Familistère of Guise, the workers’ utopia of stove maker Godin, then the Gothic cathedral of Laon perched on its hill.
Here is an original day out in the Aisne, about two hours from the Belgian border. In Guise, Jean-Baptiste André Godin, inventor of the famous cast-iron stoves, built the Familistère in the 19th century, a “social palace” where his workers lived with a school, shops, a theatre and a swimming pool. The beautifully restored site tells this human adventure through its apartments and exhibitions. After a seated lunch, the coach climbs up to the upper town of Laon, where Notre-Dame Cathedral, one of the first great Gothic buildings, watches over the plain with its towers adorned with carved oxen. Free time lets you enjoy the view from the ramparts.
