The Dunkirk 1940 museum, the Malo-les-Bains promenade, then Bergues, its ramparts, its belfry and the setting of the “Ch’tis” film.
Less than an hour from the Belgian coast, Dunkirk and Bergues offer a varied day of remembrance, North Sea air and Flemish charm. The Dunkirk 1940 museum tells the story of Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of more than 300,000 Allied soldiers in May and June 1940, in a former bastion of the port. A stroll on the wide, flat promenade of Malo-les-Bains lets you breathe the sea air before a seated lunch. In the afternoon, the small fortified town of Bergues reveals its canals, its Vauban ramparts and its UNESCO-listed belfry, made famous by the film “Welcome to the Sticks”. Little driving, lots of charm: an ideal outing for a seniors’ club.
