A day in Bruges to discover a UNESCO-listed medieval city, with its belfry, canals and beguinage.
Bruges is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe, and its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pupils discover the Market Square and its belfry, a symbol of the wealth of medieval merchants, then the Burg square, the Gothic town hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. A boat trip on the canals shows them why the city is nicknamed the “Venice of the North”. The peaceful beguinage and the Minnewater lake complete this journey into medieval life. The programme suits history and general studies classes for pupils aged 8 to 12 and the first years of secondary school, and also lends itself to a Dutch-language activity.
