A day of experiments at NEMO Science Museum in Amsterdam, with the option of the Maritime Museum and its 18th-century ship replica.
NEMO Science Museum, a large green ship-shaped building designed by architect Renzo Piano, is the biggest science centre in the Netherlands. Across several floors, pupils handle and test things for themselves: chemical reactions, electricity, light, mechanics, the human body and energy. The exhibits are designed to raise questions rather than hand out ready-made answers, which naturally extends classroom work. Right next door, the National Maritime Museum (Het Scheepvaartmuseum) and its replica of the East India Company ship Amsterdam tell the country's maritime history. The trip suits pupils aged about 10 to 16.
