A day in Vianden in the Luxembourg Ardennes: restored castle, old town on the Our river and Victor Hugo’s house.

Overlooking the Our valley, Vianden Castle is one of the finest fortified castles in Europe, fully restored from the 1970s onwards. At the foot of its walls, the little town with its slate houses and flower-decked lanes is perfect for a gentle stroll. Victor Hugo stayed here in 1871, and his house near the bridge over the Our is now a museum devoted to his visit. The chairlift gives a bird’s-eye view of the castle without effort, and a reserved lunch lets you enjoy Ardennes cooking at a relaxed pace. The coach drops the group as close to the centre as possible to limit walking.

  • Walking level: moderate (sloping street and steps at the castle; the chairlift avoids the climb on foot).
  • The chairlift runs in season, usually from spring to autumn: dates to be checked.

Cancellation and refund protection

Optional, to be taken when booking: you can cancel without giving a reason and get the base price of the trip back, provided your request reaches us at least 48 hours before departure for a day trip, 7 days before if admission tickets are included, 14 days before for a trip with overnight stays. Price: 7 % of the trip up to €1,000, 5 % from €1,001 to €2,500, 3.5 % above.
