Two days on the Verdun battlefield: the Memorial, Fort Douaumont and its ossuary, and the underground citadel.

In 1916 the Battle of Verdun pitted the French and German armies against each other for ten months and claimed more than 300,000 lives. On site, pupils gain a concrete understanding of trench warfare: ground still churned by shells, Fort Douaumont and the ossuary holding the remains of unidentified soldiers. The Verdun Memorial presents the lives of soldiers on both sides through objects, testimonies and period images. This trip is particularly suited to secondary-school history and citizenship classes and can be adapted for the last years of primary school.

Programme

Day 1: The Verdun battlefield

  • Departure from your school at the agreed time.
  • Regular breaks: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
  • Visit of the Verdun Memorial at Fleury-devant-Douaumont (on request).
  • Stop at the destroyed village of Fleury-devant-Douaumont, one of the villages that “died for France”.
  • A moment of remembrance at the Douaumont Ossuary and the national cemetery.
  • Guided tour of Fort Douaumont (on request).
  • Check-in at the accommodation and dinner.

Day 2: Underground citadel and return

  • Breakfast.
  • Visit of the underground citadel of Verdun (on request).
  • Walk through Verdun along the Meuse to the Victory Monument.
  • Regular breaks: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
  • Return to school in the evening.

Good to know

  • Identity card (Kids-ID for children under 12) and parental consent for travel abroad for each pupil, as well as the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
  • Times adapted to your school; pupils are supervised by the accompanying teachers.
  • On the battlefield, stay on marked paths; bring closed shoes and a rain jacket.

Cancellation and refund protection

Optional, to be taken when booking: you can cancel without giving a reason and get the base price of the trip back, provided your request reaches us at least 48 hours before departure for a day trip, 7 days before if admission tickets are included, 14 days before for a trip with overnight stays. Price: 7 % of the trip up to €1,000, 5 % from €1,001 to €2,500, 3.5 % above.
