5 days to understand Venice: St Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace, the islands of Murano and Burano and life in the lagoon.
Venice is a unique case study: a city built on wooden piles in the middle of a lagoon, once the capital of a merchant republic that ruled part of the Mediterranean. Pupils discover St Mark’s Square, the basilica and its mosaics, then the Doge’s Palace, the seat of power of the Serenissima, and the Bridge of Sighs. They travel by vaporetto, observe the Grand Canal and the Rialto Bridge, and look at the city’s current challenges: high tides, mass tourism and the protection of the lagoon. On Murano, a glassblowing demonstration shows a centuries-old craft, while Burano charms with its brightly coloured houses. This trip suits secondary pupils studying history, geography, science and art.
Programme
Day 1: Departure for Venice
- Departure from your school at the agreed time, in the evening.
- Overnight journey with two drivers taking turns: a 30-minute break at least every 3 hours of driving.
Day 2: Arrival and the Grand Canal
- Arrival in the morning; the coach parks at the Tronchetto terminal or at the accommodation on the mainland.
- Vaporetto travel card for getting around the lagoon (on request).
- Trip along the Grand Canal by vaporetto.
- Walk to the Rialto Bridge and its market.
- Check-in at the accommodation and dinner.
Day 3: St Mark’s and the Serenissima
- Breakfast at the accommodation.
- Discovery of St Mark’s Square.
- Visit of St Mark’s Basilica (on request).
- Guided tour of the Doge’s Palace and the Bridge of Sighs (on request).
- Walk through the alleys and along the Zattere quays.
- Return to the accommodation and dinner.
Day 4: The lagoon islands
- Breakfast at the accommodation.
- Vaporetto crossing to Murano.
- Glassblowing demonstration in a glassworks (on request).
- On to Burano and its colourful houses.
- Session on the lagoon and the acqua alta with a nature guide (on request).
- Return to the accommodation and dinner.
Day 5: Return to Belgium
- Breakfast, then return journey with two drivers and a 30-minute break every 3 hours of driving.
- Arrival back at school in the evening.

Good to know
- Identity card (Kids-ID for children under 12), parental consent for travel abroad and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for every pupil.
- Times adapted to your school; pupils are supervised by their teachers; our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
- In Venice, guided tours are limited to 25 participants per group, so a large class is split into several groups; the acqua alta is most frequent from October to January.
