A day in the “Red Lands”: the Belval blast furnaces, the Train 1900 steam railway and the Fond-de-Gras mining site.
Southern Luxembourg, known as the “Red Lands” because of the colour of its iron ore, made the Grand Duchy rich through the steel industry. In Esch-Belval, the preserved blast furnaces rise in the middle of a new university district and tell the story of this industrial saga. On Sundays in the warmer months, the Train 1900, pulled by a steam locomotive, links Pétange with Fond-de-Gras, a former mining site hidden in the forest, where the little mine train continues to the village of Lasauvage. Seated comfortably in vintage carriages, the group travels back in time without tiring. On other days, the National Mining Museum in Rumelange offers a ride by little train through its galleries.
