Gouda bij Kaarslicht as a group: the Markt lit by thousands of candles, a giant Christmas tree, carols and Gouda cheese.

On just one evening a year, in mid-December, Gouda switches off its electric lights for Gouda bij Kaarslicht. The Markt, the large triangular square in the centre, is lit only by thousands of candles, right up to the windows of the Gothic town hall, one of the oldest in the Netherlands. A huge illuminated Christmas tree stands on the square and carols accompany the evening. In the afternoon, your group discovers the town of cheese and stroopwafels, and the famous stained-glass windows of St John’s Church (Sint-Janskerk). A rare and heart-warming moment, from the departure point of your choice.

Good to know

  • A valid identity card is required for each participant.
  • Gouda bij Kaarslicht takes place on only one evening a year, in mid-December: check the date each year before fixing your trip; it is very busy and the return is late in the evening.
  • Departure and return times are adapted to your group’s pick-up point; bring warm clothes and comfortable shoes.

Cancellation and refund protection

Optional, to be taken when booking: you can cancel without giving a reason and get the base price of the trip back, provided your request reaches us at least 48 hours before departure for a day trip, 7 days before if admission tickets are included, 14 days before for a trip with overnight stays. Price: 7 % of the trip up to €1,000, 5 % from €1,001 to €2,500, 3.5 % above.
