Three days among the sandstone rocks and forests of the Mullerthal, Echternach Abbey and Vianden Castle in eastern Luxembourg.
In the east of the Grand Duchy, the Mullerthal region, nicknamed Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland, is a landscape of sandstone rocks, narrow gorges and streams deep in the forest. Pupils observe erosion and woodland life on easy hikes, then discover Echternach, the oldest town in the country, which grew up around the abbey founded by Saint Willibrord. In Vianden they visit one of the largest feudal castles in the region and the house where Victor Hugo stayed in 1871. An ideal green-class trip for the last years of primary school, or for science, geography and history lessons in secondary school.
Programme
Day 1: Journey to Echternach
- Departure from your school by coach at the agreed time.
- A 30-minute break after 3 hours of driving at most: this is our drivers’ safety rule, day and night.
- Arrival in Echternach: Market Square and Basilica of Saint Willibrord.
- Guided tour of the old town and the basilica crypt, where Saint Willibrord is buried (on request).
- Walk around Echternach Lake.
- Check-in at the youth hostel or hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Hiking in Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland
- Breakfast at the accommodation.
- Hike suited to the pupils’ age among the Mullerthal sandstone rocks, around Berdorf.
- Stop at the Schiessentümpel waterfall.
- Free lunch or packed lunch.
- Nature activity with a guide on geology and the forest (on request).
- Check-in at the youth hostel or hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Vianden and return
- Breakfast at the accommodation.
- Drive to Vianden, in the Our valley.
- Visit of Vianden Castle (on request).
- Visit of the Victor Hugo House (on request).
- Free lunch or packed lunch.
- Return journey, with a break at least every 3 hours of driving, and arrival back at school in the evening.

Good to know
- Valid identity card (Kids-ID for children under 12), parental authorisation to travel abroad and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for each pupil.
- Times adapted to your school; pupils are supervised by the accompanying teachers.
- Bring good walking shoes, a rain jacket and a small backpack; the trip is best from April to October.
