Five days of green class around the Upper Sûre Lake: water, forest, hiking, water sports and Bourscheid Castle.
In north-western Luxembourg, the Upper Sûre Nature Park surrounds a large reservoir lake with wooded shores, which supplies a large share of the country’s drinking water. Pupils study the water cycle, the protection of a water reserve and life in the Ardennes forest, through fieldwork rather than in a classroom. The village of Esch-sur-Sûre, nestled in a bend of the river, and Bourscheid Castle, perched above the valley, add a touch of medieval history. With hikes, forest games and supervised water activities, this trip is particularly suited to pupils aged 8 to 14.
Programme
Day 1: Journey to Esch-sur-Sûre
- Departure from your school by coach at the agreed time.
- A 30-minute break after 3 hours of driving at most: this is our drivers’ safety rule, day and night.
- Arrival in Esch-sur-Sûre, a village tucked into a bend of the Sûre below its ruined castle.
- Visit of the Upper Sûre Nature Park House and its former cloth mill (on request).
- Check-in at the youth hostel or hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: The Upper Sûre Lake
- Breakfast at the accommodation.
- Discovery of the Esch-sur-Sûre dam and the lake, a major drinking water reserve for the country.
- Workshop on water and nature protection with a nature park guide (on request).
- Free lunch or packed lunch.
- Supervised water activities on the lake: canoe, kayak or pedal boat (on request).
- Check-in at the youth hostel or hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Hiking and Bourscheid Castle
- Breakfast at the accommodation.
- Forest hike in the Luxembourg Ardennes on a trail suited to the pupils’ age.
- Free lunch or packed lunch.
- Visit of Bourscheid Castle, overlooking the Sûre valley (on request).
- Check-in at the youth hostel or hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Games and nature in the forest
- Breakfast at the accommodation.
- Orienteering or treasure hunt in the forest (on request).
- Free lunch or packed lunch.
- Swimming at one of the lake’s designated beaches (on request).
- Class evening at the accommodation.
- Check-in at the youth hostel or hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Return
- Breakfast at the accommodation.
- Visit of the National Museum of Natural History in Luxembourg City on the way home (on request).
- Free lunch or packed lunch.
- Return journey, with a break at least every 3 hours of driving, and arrival back at school in the evening.

Good to know
- Valid identity card (Kids-ID for children under 12), parental authorisation to travel abroad and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for each pupil.
- Times adapted to your school; pupils are supervised by the accompanying teachers.
- Best from May to September; bring a swimsuit, towel, rainwear, good shoes and a change of clothes for the water activities.
