An 8-day tour of northern Germany: Schwerin Castle, Lake Müritz, Stralsund and the chalk cliffs of the island of Rügen.
In northern Germany, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is a land of water and light, dotted with hundreds of lakes and bordered by the Baltic Sea. Schwerin Castle, set on an island in its lake, now houses the regional parliament and is one of the most romantic castles in Germany. Further east, the Müritz, the largest lake entirely within Germany, is explored by boat from the small town of Waren, on the edge of the national park. Stralsund, a former Hanseatic town listed by UNESCO, opens the way to Rügen, the country’s largest island, with its seaside resorts of white villas and the Jasmund chalk cliffs painted by Caspar David Friedrich. A nature and heritage tour, with a free day in Binz and an overnight stop on the way out and back.
