Three days in southern Luxembourg: Rumelange iron mine, Belval blast furnaces, the Science Center and workers’ history.
The south of the Grand Duchy, known as the Minett, owes its growth to the iron ore that made Luxembourg a major steel producer in the 20th century. Pupils ride a small train into an old gallery at the National Mining Museum in Rumelange, then discover the Belval blast furnaces, preserved in the middle of a modern university district. At the Luxembourg Science Center in Differdange, they carry out physics and chemistry experiments themselves. The trip also covers the immigration of workers, notably from Italy and later Portugal, and the transformation of an industrial region now recognised as a UNESCO biosphere reserve. It suits pupils from the last years of primary school to secondary school, for science, geography and history lessons.
