Two days in northern France: the Lewarde mining centre, the Louvre-Lens, Lorette hill and Old Lille.

This short trip close to Belgium tells the story of northern France, a region that shares its mining past with Wallonia. At the Centre historique minier de Lewarde, set on a former pithead, pupils discover the work and daily life of miners. The Gallery of Time at the Louvre-Lens shows masterpieces from Antiquity to the 19th century in a single hall, a fine introduction to art history. Notre-Dame-de-Lorette hill and the Ring of Remembrance, which bears the names of nearly 580,000 soldiers who fell in the region regardless of nationality, address the memory of 1914-1918. Old Lille, with its Grand’Place and Old Stock Exchange, completes a programme ideal from the last years of primary school to secondary school.

Programme

Day 1: Mining basin and Lorette

  • Departure from your school at the agreed time.
  • Regular breaks: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
  • Visit of the Centre historique minier de Lewarde (on request).
  • Guided tour of the Gallery of Time at the Louvre-Lens (on request).
  • Stop at the Notre-Dame-de-Lorette cemetery and the Ring of Remembrance.
  • Drive to Lille.
  • Check-in at the accommodation and dinner.

Day 2: Old Lille and return

  • Breakfast.
  • Walk through Old Lille: the Grand’Place, the Old Stock Exchange and the town hall belfry.
  • Visit of the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille (on request).
  • Regular breaks: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
  • Return to school in the evening.

The price includes

  • Free places for accompanying teachers (their share is included in the price per pupil)
  • Road tolls and parking fees
  • 1 night in a youth hostel or hotel, rooms for 3 to 8 pupils and separate rooms for the teachers

Good to know

  • Identity card (Kids-ID for children under 12) and parental consent for travel abroad for each pupil, as well as the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
  • Times adapted to your school; pupils are supervised by the accompanying teachers.
  • The Louvre-Lens is closed on Tuesdays; bring warm clothing for the mine visit.

Cancellation and refund protection

Optional, to be taken when booking: you can cancel without giving a reason and get the base price of the trip back, provided your request reaches us at least 48 hours before departure for a day trip, 7 days before if admission tickets are included, 14 days before for a trip with overnight stays. Price: 7 % of the trip up to €1,000, 5 % from €1,001 to €2,500, 3.5 % above.
