Leiden, Rembrandt’s birthplace: a canal boat trip, a historic botanical garden and the De Valk windmill museum.
A peaceful university town, Leiden is where Rembrandt was born in 1606, and its flat centre is crisscrossed by tree-lined canals. In the morning, your group discovers the town seated on a boat, the most restful way to admire it. The Hortus botanicus, founded in 1590, is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world: Clusius grew some of the country’s first tulips here. The De Valk windmill towers over the old ramparts, and the National Museum of Antiquities displays a genuine Egyptian temple. Walking distances remain short and everyone has free time to wander.
