Alkmaar’s cheese market and its costumed carriers, then the vegetable auction where produce is sold from a boat.
On Friday mornings from April to September, the Waag square in Alkmaar hosts a unique spectacle: carriers in white outfits and coloured hats carry the cheeses on wooden barrows, as in the old days. Your group watches the market from around the square, then discovers the canals and façades of the centre. In the afternoon, at Broek op Langedijk, the Broeker Veiling is the oldest vegetable auction where boats sail right through the auction hall: everyone can take part in a clock auction. A boat trip through the “Kingdom of a Thousand Islands” completes the day, seated and effortless. The journey is a little longer, but breaks are regular.
