Two small fortified towns and Loevestein Castle, from which Hugo Grotius escaped hidden in a book chest in 1621.

Where the Meuse and the Waal meet, three sites face each other across the water: Gorinchem, Woudrichem and Loevestein Castle. Gorinchem has kept its tree-lined ramparts and its windmill, which you follow on a flat walk. In the afternoon, a small ferry crosses the river to Loevestein Castle, a 14th-century fortress famous for the escape of the jurist Hugo Grotius, hidden in a book chest. The ferry then continues to Woudrichem, a tiny fortified town where the coach waits for the group. The castle has stairs and old floors: everyone visits at their own pace, and there are plenty of benches in the courtyard.

Programme

Good to know

  • Valid identity card and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for each participant; bring your usual medication.
  • Times adapted to your group's pick-up point; groups from 20 participants, on the date of your choice, price on quotation. Walking level: moderate, flat walks but stairs and uneven floors in the castle; wheelchair users: please tell us when booking.
  • The ferry to Loevestein runs mainly from April to October (times to be checked); out of season, the coach can take the group to the castle by road.

Cancellation and refund protection

Optional, to be taken when booking: you can cancel without giving a reason and get the base price of the trip back, provided your request reaches us at least 48 hours before departure for a day trip, 7 days before if admission tickets are included, 14 days before for a trip with overnight stays. Price: 7 % of the trip up to €1,000, 5 % from €1,001 to €2,500, 3.5 % above.
