Two days in Chartres for your group: the cathedral and its stained glass, the old town on the Eure, illuminations and Maintenon château.
Chartres Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has one of the finest collections of medieval stained glass in Europe, famous for its blue. Your group explores it at its own pace, then strolls down to the lower town and the old wash houses along the Eure. In the warmer months the evening continues with the “Chartres en lumières” illuminations on the monuments. The next day, the Château de Maintenon, once owned by Madame de Maintenon, reveals its formal French gardens and the arches of its unfinished aqueduct. The upper and lower towns are linked by sloping streets and a few steps, so we adapt the route to your group.
Programme
Day 1: Journey to Chartres and its cathedral
- Morning departure from the pick-up point of your choice.
- Coffee break on the way; our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
- Sit-down lunch in a restaurant on the way (on request).
- Visit to Chartres Cathedral, its stained glass and its labyrinth.
- Guided tour of the cathedral with a qualified guide (on request).
- Easy stroll through the old town and free time on a café terrace.
- Check-in at a hotel in the Chartres area and dinner at the hotel.
- Evening walk to see the Chartres en lumières illuminations (on request).
Day 2: Lower town and Château de Maintenon
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Tour of the town by little tourist train (on request).
- Short walk along the Eure, its bridges and old wash houses.
- Drive to Maintenon (about 20 minutes).
- Visit to the Château de Maintenon and its formal French gardens facing the aqueduct.
- Sit-down lunch in a restaurant in Maintenon (on request).
- Journey home with a coffee break.
- Return in the evening to your region.

- Walking level: moderate; sloping streets and cobbles between the cathedral and the lower town. The illuminations run every evening from about April to early January; dates to be checked each year.
