Three days in the Botte du Hainaut: boat on the Eau d’Heure Lakes, Chimay castle, Trappist cheeses and a heritage train.
The Botte du Hainaut, the southern ’boot’ of the province, is a land of forests, ponds and peaceful small towns, ideal for an effortless trip. Your group begins at the Eau d’Heure Lakes, the largest group of lakes in Belgium, discovered comfortably by boat. In Chimay, the princes’ castle and its charming little theatre tell the town’s story, while Scourmont Abbey reminds you that this is the home of Trappist beer and cheese. On the last day, a heritage train takes you through the Viroin valley. Journeys are short, walking is easy and every day keeps its moments of relaxation.
Programme
Day 1: The Eau d’Heure Lakes
- Departure in the morning from the pick-up point of your choice.
- Coffee break on the way; our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
- Arrival at the Eau d’Heure Lakes in the late morning.
- Reserved lunch by the lakes (on request).
- Boat trip on the Plate Taille lake (on request).
- Guided tour of the Plate Taille dam (on request).
- Check-in at the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Chimay and Scourmont Abbey
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Gentle stroll around Chimay’s Grand-Place and the collegiate church.
- Guided tour of the castle of the Princes of Chimay and its theatre (on request).
- Lunch and tasting of Trappist products at Espace Chimay (Auberge de Poteaupré) (on request).
- Stop at the Abbey of Our Lady of Scourmont: the church and gardens are open to visitors, the brewery is not open to the public.
- Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 3: Viroin valley and return
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Drive to Mariembourg.
- Ride on the Three Valleys heritage train between Mariembourg and Treignes (on request).
- Reserved lunch in the area (on request).
- Return journey in the afternoon, arriving back in your area in the evening.

- The Three Valleys train and the lake boats run mainly from April to October (timetable to be checked each year).
