A 7-day tour of Valtellina: the Bernina Express from Tirano to St. Moritz, Lake Como by boat and Chiavenna.
Valtellina, a long Alpine valley in Lombardy covered with terraced vineyards, is the ideal starting point for one of the most beautiful railway journeys in Europe. From Tirano, the little red Bernina Express train climbs without a rack railway up to the Bernina glaciers, then descends to St. Moritz; the line is listed by UNESCO and is enjoyed seated, without any effort. Your group stays four nights in a 3-star hotel in the valley, on half board, and also discovers Lake Como from Varenna, with the boat crossing to Bellagio. A free day leaves room for rest and local specialities such as pizzoccheri and bresaola. On the way back, the small town of Chiavenna and its natural rock cellars, the crotti, make a last picturesque stop.
Programme
Day 1: Departure and overnight stopover (central Switzerland)
- Morning departure from the place of your choice.
- Journey with regular breaks: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
- Late-afternoon arrival at the stopover hotel (central Switzerland), dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: The Gotthard, Lake Como and Valtellina
- Breakfast, then drive through the Gotthard tunnel and Ticino, with regular breaks.
- Drive along the shore of Lake Como to the entrance of Valtellina.
- Seated lunch on the way (on request).
- Afternoon arrival and check-in at the hotel in Valtellina for 4 nights, dinner.
Day 3: The Bernina Express and St. Moritz
- Short drive to Tirano and stop at the Basilica of the Madonna di Tirano.
- Bernina Express ride from Tirano to St. Moritz, via the Brusio spiral viaduct and the Bernina Pass (on request).
- The coach crosses the pass and meets the group in St. Moritz.
- Free time by the lake in St. Moritz, then return to Valtellina over the Bernina Pass.
- Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4: Lake Como: Varenna and Bellagio
- Drive to Varenna, a colourful village on the eastern shore of Lake Como.
- Walk along the lovers' path by the water.
- Boat crossing to Bellagio, the pearl of the lake (on request).
- Lunch of lake fish (on request).
- Return to Valtellina in the late afternoon and dinner at the hotel.
Day 5: Free day in Valtellina
- Free day (driver's rest day): stroll through the village, café terraces and rest at the hotel.
- Lunch of pizzoccheri, the valley's typical buckwheat pasta (on request).
- Dinner at the hotel.
Day 6: Chiavenna, then journey to the stopover (central Switzerland)
- Breakfast, then drive to Chiavenna and walk through the old town.
- Lunch in a crotto, a traditional natural cellar (on request).
- Return journey with regular breaks: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
- Late-afternoon arrival at the stopover hotel (central Switzerland), dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7: Return to Belgium
- Breakfast, then return journey with regular breaks.
- Evening return to your home area.

Good to know
- Valid identity card and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for each participant. Bring enough of your usual medication.
- Departure and return times adapted to your group's pick-up point; trip offered from May to late September, dates to be checked each year. From 20 participants, price on quotation.
- Walking level: easy (short walks, some cobbled lanes); a meeting time at the coach is set each day with the driver. Wheelchair users or guests with reduced mobility: please tell us when booking.
- Currency: euro in Italy, Swiss franc during the stopover nights in Switzerland. Bring comfortable clothes for the journey and sun cream.
