A 4-day stay in Nieuwpoort for your group: the marina, Yser memories, Westende beach, Diksmuide and Veurne.
Nieuwpoort, at the mouth of the Yser, is a family resort and fishing port where pleasure boats are counted in their hundreds. It is also a landmark of Belgian history: in October 1914, opening the sluices at the Ganzepoot flooded the Yser plain and halted the German advance, a story told by the Westfront centre at the foot of the King Albert I monument. Your group enjoys the promenade and the beach, visits quieter neighbouring Westende and discovers Diksmuide, its Yser Tower and the Grote Markt of Veurne. In Oostduinkerke, with a little luck, you can watch shrimp fishing on horseback, a tradition on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list. A short seaside break on half board, with no long drives.
Programme
Day 1: Arrival in Nieuwpoort
- Morning departure from the place of your choice.
- Journey with regular breaks: no more than 3 hours of driving, then a 30-minute break.
- Drive to the Belgian coast and arrival in Nieuwpoort in the late morning.
- Stroll along the channel and the marina.
- Check-in for 3 nights on half board.
Day 2: The Yser, Diksmuide and Veurne
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Stop at the Ganzepoot sluices and the King Albert I monument.
- Visit to the Westfront Nieuwpoort centre on the 1914 floods (on request).
- Visit to the Yser Tower and its museum in Diksmuide (on request).
- Visit to the Trench of Death (Dodengang) (on request).
- Stop on the Grote Markt of Veurne, then back to the hotel for dinner.
Day 3: Westende and Oostduinkerke
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Free morning on the promenade and the beach.
- Coast tram ride to Westende (on request).
- In the afternoon, drive to Oostduinkerke; in season, a chance to watch shrimp fishing on horseback.
- Visit to the NAVIGO fishing museum (on request).
- Return to the hotel for dinner.
Day 4: Last morning and return
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Free morning for a last walk by the sea.
- Fish and shrimp lunch at the harbour (on request).
- Departure in the afternoon.
- Evening return to your region.

Good to know
- An identity card for each participant; departure and return times adapted to your group’s pick-up point.
- Currency: euro; possible all year round, livelier from April to September; bring a windproof jacket, as the sea breeze is cool even in summer.
- Shrimp fishing on horseback only takes place on certain dates, mainly in summer and depending on the tides: check for the year.
