Four days in Lüneburg: brick old town and Stint harbour, the heath in bloom by horse carriage, heather honey and an abbey.
Made rich for centuries by the salt trade, Lüneburg has kept its gabled brick façades, its great town hall and its old Stint harbour with its wooden crane intact. Close by lies the Lüneburg Heath, a gentle landscape of heather, juniper and Heidschnucke sheep that turns purple at the end of summer. Your group crosses it effortlessly by horse carriage to the car-free village of Wilsede, with a stop to taste heather honey. On the last morning, Lüne Abbey, founded in the Middle Ages, opens its peaceful cloisters. Lüneburg’s streets are cobbled but flat, and three nights in the same 3-star hotel on half board guarantee an unhurried stay.
Programme
Day 1: Journey to Lüneburg
- Morning departure from the place of your choice.
- Journey with a coffee break and a lunch stop: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
- Arrival in Lüneburg in the late afternoon.
- Check-in at the hotel, dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Lüneburg, the salt town
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Guided tour of the old town: Am Sande square, the town hall, the Stint harbour district and the old crane (on request).
- Seated lunch in the old town (on request).
- Visit of the German Salt Museum, on the site of the former saltworks (on request).
- Free time to stroll, then dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 3: The Lüneburg Heath
- Breakfast at the hotel, then drive into the heart of the heath.
- Horse-drawn carriage ride across the heath to the village of Wilsede (on request).
- Country lunch at an inn on the heath (on request).
- Stop at a beekeeper’s to discover heather honey (on request).
- Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Lüne Abbey and return
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Guided tour of Lüne Abbey and its cloisters (on request).
- Departure in the late morning, free lunch on the way and regular breaks.
- Return in the evening to your region.

- Walking level: easy (flat but cobbled old town; the heath is explored by carriage, with no walking required).
- The heather usually blooms from mid-August to mid-September, the ideal time; carriages and abbey tours depend on the season, to be checked each year.
