Two days on the Rhine: Christmas market by Mainz Cathedral, the Gutenberg Museum, Chagall, then Wiesbaden and its Kurhaus.
About three hours’ drive from Belgium, Mainz and Wiesbaden face each other across the Rhine. In Mainz, the Christmas market is set up below the great Romanesque cathedral, close to the Gutenberg Museum, devoted to the inventor of printing. Marc Chagall’s blue stained-glass windows in St Stephen’s Church are a moving moment, but the church stands on a hill: the coach takes you closer. The next day, Wiesbaden, an elegant spa town, hosts the Sternschnuppenmarkt, the “shooting star market”, on the Palace Square, a stone’s throw from the Kurhaus and its gardens. A short break with little driving and flat centres, ideal for a first Christmas trip abroad.
Programme
Day 1: Mainz, Gutenberg’s city
- Departure in the morning from the place of your choice.
- Comfortable coach journey; our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
- Coffee break on the way.
- Arrival in Mainz in the late morning.
- Seated lunch in the old town (on request)
- Visit of the Gutenberg Museum and its printed Bible (on request)
- Visit of St Stephen’s Church and its Chagall windows, with coach access (on request)
- Free time at the Christmas market below the cathedral.
- Check-in at the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Wiesbaden and return
- Breakfast at the hotel, then a short drive to Wiesbaden.
- Guided walk: Kurhaus, colonnades, spa park and the Kochbrunnen hot spring (on request)
- Free time at the Sternschnuppenmarkt on the Palace Square.
- Seated lunch in Wiesbaden (on request)
- Return in the late afternoon or early evening to your region.

- A valid identity card is required; departure and return times are adapted to your pick-up point.
- Walking level: easy (flat centres, some cobblestones; St Stephen’s Church is on a hill, reached by coach).
- Christmas markets run from late November to late December, to be checked each year; wheelchairs and reduced mobility: please let us know when booking.
- Bring your usual medication and your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC); currency: euro.
